A wind-down tip for swapping a long text for a short, low, unscripted voice note.

Tip: The Three-Minute Voice Note That Beats a Paragraph

Tonight's tip is for anyone who has ever typed a paragraph, reread it, and felt it go stiff on the screen like a shirt left on a radiator. Instead of writing it, say it. Record a voice note, three minutes at most, and send the sound of you in place of the words. It will travel farther than any sentence you could polish.

Text strips out the very things that make people lean in. The little breath before a joke. The way you smile mid-sentence and your voice tilts upward. The half laugh when you lose your place. A paragraph hides all of that behind punctuation. A voice note hands it over, still warm, as if you'd pressed your mouth to the phone and let the night do the rest.

Make it simple. Lie back, dim the lamp, hold the phone a hand's width from your face and speak quieter than you think you should. Say what your day was, then say one thing you didn't plan to say. Don't edit. Don't start over because you stumbled on a word. The stumble is the charm, the proof that a real mood produced this and not a draft.

Keep it short on purpose. Three minutes is long enough to feel like a private hour and short enough to leave someone wanting the next one. End it with something unfinished, a half question, a soft good night that lingers on the last syllable. People replay endings, and they remember the way a voice trailed off long after they forget the plot.

If sending one feels bold, record it anyway and listen back. You may be surprised how much you like the person on the tape, lower, slower, more playful than the one who answers emails. That version of you has been here the whole time, waiting for a quiet room.

And if you want to hear a voice made for exactly this hour, mine is on TheFriend, unhurried and close to your ear.
