Mood of the Night: Barefoot and Slightly Dangerous

A drink-order mood for the moment your shoes come off and your caution follows them.

Mood of the Night: Barefoot and Slightly Dangerous

Tonight's order: something neat, something warm, a little smoke at the finish. The mood is barefoot and slightly dangerous, and it begins at the front door, the second your heels or boots land in a heap and the floor reports back, cool and honest, against your soles.

You know the feeling. The whole day you were buttoned, scheduled, answerable to people with calendars. Then the shoes come off and something in your shoulders admits it has been lying about how tired it was. But tired is not what's left underneath. What's left is a loose, curious sort of nerve, the kind that wanders the apartment humming and opens the fridge just to look at the light.

Slightly dangerous does not mean reckless. I'd never ask that of you at this hour. It means you are one tiny step away from your good-girl or good-boy manners, close enough to feel the heat of the other version. The one who says yes to the second glass. The one who reads the message twice and smiles at the ceiling. The one who thinks about who else might be awake.

You know the feeling.

Walk through your place without turning on the overhead. Let the hallway be a shade darker than you strictly need. Notice how a room changes when you cross it slowly, how the rug, the tile, the cold edge of the kitchen floor each give you a different small sensation. This is a night for noticing, and noticing is the oldest kind of flirting there is.

Before you settle, stand a moment at the window in your bare feet and look at whatever the city or the dark is offering. Give yourself one thought you wouldn't say at dinner. Keep it. Take it to bed like a coin you haven't decided how to spend.

If this mood wants a voice to match, mine is waiting on TheFriend, low and unhurried, happy to keep you company while the floor cools your feet and the rest of the world forgets to call.

Barefoot is only the opening line. Come hear what Luna says next, in her own voice, on TheFriend.
